Here is some of our frequently asked questions

  • What is a new container?

New shipping containers are manufactured in the Far East using high quality Corten steel. They are loaded with a cargo in Far East and shipped once into the UK. They are then delivered to their destination in the UK to have the cargo removed and returned to one of our local UK depots before  being made available for resale.

This is why you will have heard them referred to as ‘one trip’ or ‘single journey’ ‘one way’ etc.

Taking into account transit time, you can expect a new ‘one trip’ container to be around 6 – 10  months old from date of manufacture on the plate by the time you receive it, but you can be assured they are all ‘one trip’ containers.

They are as new as you can possibly get in the UK, as no ISO shipping containers are manufactured domestically.

During this transit they will have been handled a few times, and you can expect that a new shipping container will have some light scuffs (particular on the corner posts where they are butted up to other containers on a container ship), occasionally a minor dint/s, and some light marks internally on the walls/ floor where they have been loaded/ unloaded.

However, rest assured all our new shipping containers are inspected when they are returned to our UK depots to ensure they have received no damage outside the above mentioned parameters.

New shipping containers come with a lock box on the double doors as standard, and typically in a choice of RAL6007 green, RAL5013 blue, RAL5010 blue (other colours maybe available upon request), multiple ventilation points, a choice of 3 bar doors (easy openers) or traditional 4 bar doors, and a  28mm marine hardwood flooring.

  • What is the lifespan of a new container?

This would depend on what you are using the container for, however for general domestic storage there is no reason a properly maintained new shipping container wouldn’t last 30 - 50 years.

  • What is a used container?

Shipping containers are typically used by shipping lines/ leasing companies until they are 10 – 15  years old. They are then retired from the fleet and replaced with new. At this point they become available for resale to container traders like us, so you can expect a used container to be around this age.

As they have been used for international shipping over their lifespan, you can expect a used shipping container to show signs of wear which may include, dents, patch repair/s, surface rust, scuffs to flooring etc. However, rest assured all our used containers are inspected in our depots to ensure they are structurally sound, operational double doors and fully weathertight.

Used shipping containers don’t generally have a lock box on the double doors as standard. We can add one of these to the cargo doors for an additional charge. They will typically have 2 – 4 air vents. Exterior colours cannot usually be guaranteed on used equipment. They come in shipping line livery and released on a “next from stack” basis.

  • Do you buy back containers?

Yes, we offer a buy back on all shipping containers purchased from us, providing they are in the same condition as they were sold (no modifications etc.).

Buyback price will be determined on the market conditions at the time of sale. We can also arrange collection, which would be factored into the buyback price.

  • Do I need planning permission for my container?

Shipping containers are classed as portable buildings or temporary structures and can usually be  erected without planning permission. However, if they are to be placed in a sensitive area or are to be in a location long term then planning permission may be required. Planning authorities always say that it is best to enquire if planning permission is required.

  • How do you deliver my shipping container?

Unless otherwise stated, delivery is carried out with a HIAB vehicle (crane assisted vehicle) and we  offload to the ground at your location.

  • Are there any restrictions with delivery?

You must advise us prior to order if you have any concerns with regards to delivery, for example if there any restrictions that may obstruct the delivery vehicle from accessing the site/ area where the container is to be placed, overhead cables etc.

We can advise on this or may ask for photos that we can forward on to the haulage contractor for reassurance/ advice, which usually suffices. However, in the unlikely event we cannot provide a definitive answer from the photos, then we may be able to carry out a

    site visit (subject to cost).

Note, that due to the weight of the vehicles, we cannot usually drive over grass unless it has been prior agreed.

Although 99% of deliveries go without hiccup, if you have any concerns at all then it is recommended to get this checked before delivery, to avoid any unnecessary wasted costs.

  • How do I prepare my site for delivery of the container?

You need to ensure the surface where the container will be offloaded is relatively flat and firm enough to support the weight of the container.

We recommend siting the container on either paving slabs or railway sleepers (to be supplied/ positioned by customer). Our helpful hauliers will help assist with the positioning of the container on delivery.

Note, once the container has been positioned, we recommend you open/ close the cargo doors, and  walk in the container front to back to ensure not racking in anyway. It is strongly advised to do this before the hauliers leave site, which will ensure the container is level and fully operational.

  • How long does it take to deliver my container?

We can usually deliver our containers in around 3 – 5 working days from the date we receive payment. Note that this will depend on hauliers and stock availability. Delivery times are usually Monday – Friday 0700hrs – 1800hrs.

Note, if you require a specific delivery date/ time then we can usually accommodate this, however additional charges may apply which would be agreed prior.

  • Can I collect my shipping container?

Yes, you can collect your own shipping container if preferred. We would provide the collection depot address and the release reference required to collect. Note, most depots usually require that your vehicle has twistlocks, and some may require notice to ensure the container is out of the stacks and

available. We would confirm this with you at the time.

  • How can I pay for my shipping container?

Our preferred method of payment is bank transfer.
